Limewash, A Beautiful History Written on Your Walls

Jennifer Gray Art

For thousands of years, limewash has been used to color and protect walls, from Mediterranean villas to Mexican adobe homes. Now, it’s making a quiet yet powerful return. At Livolia, we love materials that hold history, health, and beauty in equal measure. Limewash does all three.

What Is Limewash?

Limewash is a natural paint made from slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and water. When exposed to air, it reacts with carbon dioxide to harden into calcium carbonate the same compound found in seashells. The result is a soft, matte finish with subtle movement, perfect for creating depth and warmth in any space.

Unlike synthetic paints, limewash penetrates the surface instead of sitting on top of it. It allows walls to “breathe,” making it ideal for older homes or anyone focused on healthy living.

A Brief History

Limewash dates back to ancient Egypt and Rome. It was used in Europe throughout the Middle Ages to coat stone buildings and later found its way into adobe and earthen homes in the Americas. Historically valued for its antimicrobial properties, limewash helped keep homes healthier long before modern medicine.

Ingredients Matter

Limewash is made from, calcium hydroxide (slaked lime), water and natural mineral pigments (optional, for color). That’s it, no VOCs, no synthetic additives, no toxic fumes. It's one of the most natural finishes available.

How to Apply Limewash

Limewash requires a slightly different application process than standard paint, but the reward is a finish unlike any other.

Prep: Use on porous surfaces like plaster, drywall, or brick. Seal or prime glossy surfaces beforehand.
Apply: Use a natural-bristle brush to apply in overlapping strokes. Apply 2–3 coats for depth.
Dry Time: Allow at least 24 hours between coats. It lightens as it dries.
Maintenance: Touch-ups blend beautifully, no need to repaint entire walls.

Where It’s Made and Who Makes It

Many high-quality limewash brands source and manufacture in small batches across Europe and the U.S. Some of our favorites include:

Domingue Architectural Finishes (USA)

Bauwerk Colour (Germany/Australia)

Kreidezeit (Germany)

Portola Paints (USA)

Each company emphasizes natural sourcing, artisan production, and environmental integrity.

Bringing It Home

Whether you're after soft whites, earthy taupes, or rich mineral tones, limewash offers texture, movement, and soul. It's perfect for bedrooms, kitchens, or any place where calm meets character.

At Livolia, we believe in the quiet power of thoughtful materials. Limewash is more than paint, it’s a story told in layers.
